The cut-up entitled “Viruses Were An Accident ?” first appeared in Minutes To Go, printed in Paris for Two Cities Editions by Techni-Press on April 13, 1960. On April 13, 2020 it was re-printed by Aloes Books using a stencil cut on an Underwood No 5 and turned out of a Gestetner duplicator at a secret location on Mount View Road in London. The brochure format encloses 2 leaves of mimeo - the cut-up and a covering page - plus a tipped-on photo card , an extra photocard and an extra cut-up mimeo page, both loosely inserted. This issue is limited to ten copies only and uses material corrected by hand from the first issue which was distributed on call off via the excellent ‘forum’ “Burroughs & Associates”. This first distribution was free. This second issue has only been made possible by the generous contributions made by recipients to cover the postage costs of the first issue. Aloes is grateful for these but to keep life simple is going to charge for the second issue of which there are only 10 copies. Narrative
The Underwood No 5 used for the stencils was owned by William Burroughs when he lived in Centre Street, New York during the mid-60s and has been in storage ever since. It was gifted to its current owner, the writer and neurologist Andrew Lees, by a grateful patient who knew of his enthusiasm for Burroughs. I was asked by Andrew, who knew of my enthusiasm for both Burroughs and typewriters, to rehabilitate the machine. Its many years in attic storage had filled it with urban crud. During cleaning, from inside a tunnel and alcove created by the key lever tension springs, the desiccated parts of Periplaneta Americana emerged. If I were a cockroach, then I guess going to die inside of a typewriter once owned by William Burroughs is as good as it gets.
